The theme of this trip is the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus, born in present-day Sremska Mitrovica, who planted the first vines on Mount Fruska Gora, thus launching a history of grapevine cultivation in present-day Serbia.
In the course of the journey we walk the Prob trails, get acquainted with the magic of Fruska Gora, with important cultural and historical sights, enjoy the gastronomic specialties, and through the story of the history of these regions we learn how the vine disappeared and was reborn on this mountain.
The first stop is Sremska Mitrovica, where, through a walk and a story, we are introduced to Sirmium, one of the former capitals of the Roman Empire, over which the present-day city was built. In the city center, in the wine cellar, Emperor Prob personally toasts us with wine and offers us specialties from his table.
We continue our journey by climbing slowly along Fruska Gora towards Irig, where we visit the Basement of 1930, a former giant of Fruska Gora, now owned by the Kovacevic family, where kind hosts will introduce us to the history of this family and take us on a tour of the winery.
A few kilometers from Cellar 1930 is a wine house that is also owned by this family. Here, friendly hosts, with lunch made up of great culinary specialties, will introduce us to the three widely known wines of the Kovacevic Winery.
We continue our journey towards Petrovaradin, where the fortress offers a unique view of Novi Sad and the Danube River, which further connects us to Sremski Karlovci, a beautiful wine village at the foot of Fruška Gora. After a short stroll through the city center, we arrive at Kish Winery – our last stop. Here, with the traditional Sremska snack, we are introduced to four wines of this small family winery, which has existed since 1830.
We end the walk along Prob’s paths with a sweet Vojvodina delicacy and the famous Bermet, a dessert wine that celebrated the Kiš Winery, Sremske Karlovc and Fruska Gora, which in its own way evokes the wines that Roman emperors adored, and through words and rhymes they were celebrated by many famous and unknown people who resided in this region.
During this wine day we toast three times, following the Serbian tradition.
